First surfers revived an outdated surf craft called Stand Up Paddle board. Now kayakers have invented an entirely new craft.

Ladies and gentlemen kayakers, cast aside your paddles and lay down on your stomachs. I present to you.... The Bellyak!

The website describes the latest water sport invention thusly:

A bellyak is a boat designed to be ridden on your belly. The boat features a planing hull, much like a kayak, that allows quick direction changes and floats the boater over and through the water. There are no straps or skirts to confine you to the boat. It’s a high reward, and low risk way to explore rivers, oceans and lakes. The boat is approximately 8 feet long, 24 inches wide, and weighs approximately 30 pounds.

It really looks cool, fun and like there's a potential market but is Bellyak the best name they could come up with? Are we really going to hear dudes in the bar: '...the surf was crappy today so I went Bellyakking'. Really?

I propose calling it FFK or Face First Kayaking... Then bars will rejoice when the surf is off because we can all go FFK-ing...

Let's see...

Is this the next big thing? Check out the Bellyak website and let us know what you think in comments.

The bent plywood speedster, an entrant in the HAWK Hildesheim race, came third overall though it did clock the fastest time on the day. These cars run for ten to fifteen minutes on a battery which presumably, are changed out in formula one style pit stops during the race. But it's not the performance that we're blown away by. The concept maybe, but this thing is a work of art, man. “The goal was to create an extraordinary vehicle powered by an e-motor,” explains project participant Jirka Robert Wolff." A statement to which we can only reply - job done, bud. Job well done...

Photographers both aspiring and expert will find this free online virtual lighting studio quite useful. The interface lets you add different lights with gells, softboxes etc at different angles and outputs what the effects of your positioning and modification would be. The 'app' looks like a great way to design lighting or even just see what the difference is between the effects of a bare bulb, soft box and a ring light. The software is in Beta but works really well already. Give it a shot, try not to get mesmerised by the freaky blue eyed 'model' though...

If you've ever been out on the trail and had your down jacket or sleeping bag soaked, you'll appreciate the significance of this innovation. Many of us want the light-weight and insulating benefits of down-filled winter gear but go for a synthetic fill because of it's quick drying property and the peace of mind that it brings. Well, no more. The guys at Down Decor and Sierra Designs have introduced a technical down that is not only water-repellant but the 'nano treatment also provides anti-microbial and anti-bacterial protection' in outdoor gear. DownTek is a game changer, for sure.

Visit DownTek's product website.

Weighing just 9 kg, the Bergmönch folds into a small backpack that rests comfortably on the back, providing easy access to equipment and provisions on the trek up a mountain. When it’s time to come back down, however, the device unfolds in two minutes and converts into a fully spring-mounted downhill vehicle capable of handling rough terrain. Riders can kneel during the trail’s smoother stretches and then stand up during the rough sections.
